i knew i was in for some good reading when the following statement was already found in the second page of states and economic development:

"marxist and neo-liberal perspectives on the successes and failures of development have exaggerated the significance of the world economy and market mechanisms, and consequently underestimated the differential autonomy and capacities of sovereign states for mobilizing their internal resources." (weiss and hobson, 1995; emphasis mine)
